What I Love About Our Trip

Our trip is a constant, exciting adventure. I love travel and always have since the earliest trip I can remember, our exciting trip to Belize.

From the things you learn to the people you meet, from the food you try to taking a break from school (unless you count a little writing and the occasional online math work), it is always interesting. This year we’ve learned things that most kids sitting behind desks in Lake Oswego don’t know. Tucked away back at home you hear about poverty stricken places but don’t know how poverty stricken they really are. You think you’ve tried good Malaysian or Vietnamese dishes but really, the only way to experience superb cuisine is if you eat that food in its homeland.

One of the nicest parts of traveling is that I don’t have to attend six and a half hours of boring school plus complete 30 minutes of homework each day. Instead, I spend 30 minutes to an hour writing 3 days a week plus a little online math. I can also do this whenever I want as long as I finish it on time. I have a flexible schedule, if I have one at all. At home, it’s always school, swim, home every day except for weekends and holidays.

On this trip, I get to learn about different reef life and the geography of South-East Asia. I am learning about things that are useful, but aren’t covered in the school curriculum, like the geography of Australia and names of tropical fruits and plants. Also, I get to learn the geography and culture of Europe while not behind a desk with a pencil in my hand. I learn it without realizing as I plan things to do and food to eat in Italy, Germany, Greece, and Britain.

While traveling, I get more time to read and swim. It’s luxurious to spend an afternoon curled up in a chair on the deck, getting lost in a Harry Potter novel. In addition, trying new foods is very interesting, even if they are not always the tastiest. (For example, I tried crickets and I am in no hurry to taste those again.) I never knew that I had yet to taste tasted good Indian or Thai food until I went on this amazing adventure of a trip.

Another great part about traveling is meeting other people who love to travel. I met some friends in Penang, Malaysia who stayed for a sleepover at our apartment. We also met another traveling family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia who we met up with on our exploration through temples and caves. They were new to traveling.  Their first stop was KL.

All in all, traveling is a fantastic journey of learning, excitement, relaxation, and just plain fun. I love this adventure we are taking and I know that I will remember this wonderful experience forever.

What a nice letter You’ll make all your school mates jealous, Lo. Are you sure you want to tell them how little paperwork you actually do?
However, if the choices are crickets, or American food which only looks like the real food from the foreign countries, I still think I’d forget the crickets. Bleckkkk.
Your writing is very good, sweetie. I hope to see more of it. I like having the view of your trip through your eyes.

Where did you eat crickets? How were they prepared? I just saw an ad for cricket flour to use in baking! Lots of protein I guess! I love to read your perspectives on travel and love seeing your photos. Also, you look so much bigger and older! Yeeps!
